About Karl Schwanzer
Karl Schwanzer [1918-1975], a key proponent of post-war architecture, founded his own studio on graduating from Vienna’s University of Technology. International recognition did not come immediately, ultimately a consequence of Schwanzer’s working methods and his attitude towards architecture, guided by the principle that “quality is more important than merit”. Firmly convinced of this, he was meticulous in adhering to his own quality standards, no matter how small the assignment. Schwanzer pioneered new techniques in architecture and designed many striking structures, including the BMW headquarters in Munich, also known as the “BMW four-cylinder”. He was also a furniture designer and founded the Austrian Institute for Design.
